Election fever

Sunday, 8:00 AM. I had breakfast with Gus Tambunting (Paranaque Vice Mayor candidate)'s campaign music (to the tune of '70s hit Bongga ka 'day) playing in the background. Ahh. Just what I need to set the perfect ambience for a quiet Sunday morning.

Monday, 7:45 AM. The Monday morning traffic was unusually heavy in the cramped streets of Better Living. Bad traffic usually peaked on Wednesdays, for some strange reason. As soon as we make the turn that leads to SLEX, ah, we find Roilo Golez (Congressional candidate who I dearly support) in the flesh, in his poster-boy eggplant-purple polo shirt, waving with glee.

With only less than a week until the anticipated/dreaded (depends on what viewpoint you're coming from) 2007 elections, the streets have been packed with candidates hiking up their campaign efforts. As we've been bombarded with posters, TVCs, RCs, interviews, and whatnot, the public has been pretty much kept abreast with everything that they need to know. But with only a few days left, everyone's vigilance must be taken up a notch or two.

I haven't completed my "Top 12" list (of senators). Until a few days ago, I only had five. As of this morning, I've finally hit nine, two of which are in the "maybe" pile. I don't know how many people are taking the elections seriously, but I'm one of them. I know that some are taking advantage of the extended weekend. Taking a holiday vs. exercising civic duty. It's no doubt that option A is a lot more fun. No lines, no sweat, no creepy guys chasing you for ballot kodigos. But really, the decline in "respectable" candidates should serve as a warning that we should be taking our civic responsibilities more seriously. People who can legally vote but do NOT vote have NO RIGHT to complain about the state of the government. So if you're one of those who love to rant about the depressing state we are supposed to be in, then you better set your alarm for May 14.

Here are some sources that I've found to be useful, discovered mostly through emails and Google searches ---
(Some lang because I couldn't retrieve all of them anymore)

Philippine General Elections 2007 on Wikipedia - A comprehensive article on the political parties, the election system, and candidates.

Black and White Movement - "The truth has no shades of gray. It must be as clear as black and white", as the movement's vision states. The movement categorizes congressional and party list candidates into their "black list" (must not support due to hidden agendas) and "white list" (must support candidates!). Lists down which party list candidates have current ties with which incumbent senators and not completely independent as they should be.

Philippine Elections 2007 on WP
- Contains profiles of all senatorial candidates and platforms of the selected few. Also has links to some candidates' official blogs and websites.

Isang Tanong @ GMA - In case you weren't able to catch this GMA Public Affairs special the past two Sundays, you may read the transcripts on this link. Senatoriables are placed on the spot and asked relevant questions. Very enlightening. Note: transcripts are in Filipino. This show secured Migs Zubiri a sure spot on my 12, when I wasn't even considering him in the first place.

Blue Ballot '07 - The GUIDON's election coverage

Well I've visited a lot of other election-related sites, but right now these are the ones that's on top of my mind. Happy reading! :)
